Washiba is dark brown, occasionally streaked black; cold to touch, fine textured, and straight to irregular grained. The wood is very hard and strong, resistant to cross strain, and very durable.

Heartwood is golden brown, sometimes with an olive or greenish hue. Color darkens with age. The contrasting sapwood is light yellow.
